Training of middle managers strengthens the workplace

Conflict resolution, collaboration, value-based workplace, and situational leadership are some of the important topics that six middle managers at BSB Industry have become more knowledgeable about in a course at IBC in Kolding, Southern Jutland.

Henio Rathcke

The training spanned a good year, encompassing 10 course days where the middle managers acquired a comprehensive set of tools and strategies to use in their day-to-day management of the company.

- It has been a highly informative course, integrating many case studies from our day-to-day operations. This has enabled me to apply the theory and tools learned in the classroom directly to the production floor, says Heino Rathcke, Cutting Department Manager at BSB Industry, one of the course participants.

Middle managers are the foundation of success

Ever since its first products were crafted in a horse stable at Binderup Strand in 2000, BSB Industry has embarked on a remarkable growth journey. Today, the steel company ranks in the Danish business daily Børsen’s Top1000 list of the largest companies in Denmark.

- For years, BSB Industry has been speeding down the highway at 200 kilometers per hour, achieving tremendous successes. Middle managers have played a key role in this, and it's essential that we consistently prioritize their continued education and leadership development. We need to ensure that they have the necessary managerial tools and feel equipped to achieve and meet the company's goals, explains Production Manager, Heino Pedersen, as to the rationale behind the training initiative.

New tools make a difference

I've gained deeper self-understanding and improved my communication skills, recognizing the diverse personality profiles of my team. In essence, I've learned to treat my people differently to treat them equally.

High ambitions and strong determination

In the laser department, Heino Rathcke appreciates that, just as when he joined BSB Industry back in 2004, the company continually strives for the best for its employees and leaders.

- Our senior management listens to us and values our feedback. For instance, post-training, our group of middle managers suggested having monthly meetings with management to stay updated on company developments across departments and locations. The outcome is that we can collaborate more effectively, whether it's about delivering customer solutions, improving workplace well-being, or other objectives, says Heino Rathcke.

Department head gains clarity in leadership role

As the Cutting Department Manager at BSB Industry, Heino Rathcke oversees a 7-person team, experts in everything from cutting to grinding, bending, countersinking, threading, and rolling. While the training didn't necessarily enlighten him on the production aspects, it provided profound insights into self-awareness.

- I've gained deeper self-understanding and improved my communication skills, recognizing the diverse personality profiles of my team. In essence, I've learned to treat my people differently to treat them equally. The course equipped me with valuable tools to bring out the best in each team member, explains Heino Rathcke, who is eager for more educational endeavors in the future.

- I want to hone my skills further, particularly in conflict resolution and integrating diverse workplace cultures. Therefore, I aim to enroll in the Basic Leadership Course as soon as possible, emphasizes Heino Rathcke, Cutting Department Manager at BSB Industry.
